An Introduction Into Vibrational Medicine Present in Music...

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Are we in danger of losing the true gift of music? In this blog I hope to explore why focussing on music for entertainment has reduced our understanding of the potential of music and explain the fundamental principles of Vibrational Medicine within music.

What constitutes Vibrational Medicine in music?

  • Music is composed of organised vibrations.

  • Vibration is the matrix that underpins all nature.

  • Every atom, molecule, cell, gland and organ of the body absorbs and emits vibration.

  • How we resonate to certain sounds and frequencies dependent on our own vibration.

  • The effect music has on our emotional and physical body is instantaneous, and proven by science.

  • We don’t just hear music - we feel it. Its power surpasses our conscious mind and activates our subconscious, at a cellular level.

  • When our body is balanced and strong, we naturally connect deeper to our internal and external worlds, to the planet and the cosmos.

  • Music that contains Vibrational Medicine brings balance to our body which strengthens this connection by shifting our brain waves states to sync closer to that of the Earth - Her heartbeat.

Vibrational Medicine is the use of vibration for the intension of healing the body. There are different forms of Vibrational Medicine, all of which follow the philosophies and traditions of natural medicine. Healing remedies produced using dynamisation or an alchemical process have the ability to treat not just specific physical health conditions, but also mental and emotional health.

For example:

Music also falls into this category by virtue of its construction - which is totally vibration.

Vibrational Medicine has been used for thousands of years in many cultures and civilisations around the planet from Ancient Egyptians to modern day doctors in Europe. These healing traditions have been passed down from generation to generation to ensure information, education and wisdom is not lost, misused, or misappropriated.

When music is used for medicine, in its correct form, it strengthens all systems of the body by supporting and echoing the correct frequency found within each molecule of the body. This means it is profoundly powerful. Every part of the body, even the smallest constituent is a part of a bioenergetic communication network that is affected by vibration. Vibrational Medicine stimulates this network to work effectively and activates the body’s restorative systems to respond, regulate and balance without the side-effects often associated with pharmacological remedies.

My background in Vibrational Medicine

In recent years I decided to focus on developing the integration of my classical music education and holistic health background with the scientific research and knowledge necessary to produce music that incorporates the correct healing frequencies referred to as Vibrational Medicine. I have been extremely fortunate to be guided by my mother, Colleen O'Flaherty-Hilder who is an international pioneer in Natural Medicine. Once I had reached a level where I was able to create extemporised choral music pieces that seemed to reach deep into the subconscious using Vibrational Medicine, I realised how much my background has supported this transformation in my creative and spiritual practice. This unique and highly informed background in holistic health has led me to further research the healing abilities of music and endeavour to help bring more awareness to this ancient art form.

I saw meditation music gain in popularity throughout the pandemic as meditation has been proven to be a useful tool to help lower stress levels. As the market for music that assists in relaxation grew, naturally the number of ‘sound healing’ short courses also mushroomed. I realised, as with all healing disciplines, the education and experience needed to create and deliver this type of music is not superficial, and the process of becoming a ‘sound healer’ is complex based on the knowledge and in depth understanding of: classical music, composition and performance; the science of frequencies; and crucially how frequencies can release trauma, bring trauma to the surface and how to deal with that effectively.

As with any healing modality, if the practice is not respected and the practitioner no ‘in right relationship’ with their modality, it will either not work, or do more damage than good, not just for the audience but also the practitioner could develop health concerns and will eventually have to take a break or give up completely. When it comes to mainstream music, we seem to have shifted towards preferring music which reinforces a lived experience, rather than aspiring to release and recalibrate. Thankfully there are a handful of mainstream artists who are trying to redefine ‘mainstream’, but these pioneers are still restricted by the industry itself.

Is Vibrational Medicine in Mainstream Music?

Viewing the music business today, most of its produce has been created for entertainment purposes and there is little consideration for its healing potential. From creation to completion most of the focus is on making a ‘hit’ and the success of the track is usually measured by the fans’ engagement. Music is being made to satisfy the entertainments of the audience: if fans want to be entertained- then the music/show must be entertaining - if fans want to dance into the early hours- then the music must be energetic and so on and so forth. In terms of entertainment, we tend to have favourite artists/bands based on two factors; their brand identity - what and who they represent, their community, values etc, and their sound - their live stage presence combined with the quality of recorded music. This is important, especially for the younger generation. Music and live music events can help you find your tribe, where you feel safe, accepted, and supported - Music has the ability to bring communities together and strengthen our connection with each other. Music has the ability to do much more than just entertain.

The positive effects of music that incorporates Vibrational Medicine has been proven by science to improve physical and emotional health. Unfortunately there are many issues related to recording music today that have limited the exposure of music’s true abilities. For example:

Have you ever been to a gig where the band was let down by the ‘sound guy’ on the mixing desk? Or, how you were either blown away by a live gig and not so much by the record? Or, the live gig sounded exactly like the record, which was sort of disappointing? So much of this industry is focused on how well the sound is translated to the audience - live or recorded. My experience of the music industry has provided me with a great deal of insight. I have worked with song writers, producers and mixing engineers whose future work all depends on how well they can do their job; this means, how skilled they are in helping the artist sound their best. I have seen engineers redesign, manipulate and reshape vocals from popular mainstream artists to improve the performance tone. Sometimes this process completely changes the singer's vocal signature in the search for a more ‘palatable’ sound. I have seen engineers autotune every single note sung, and whole frequencies erased. This intensive manipulation of sound completely changes an artist's sound which can be great but this process means that the valuable healing frequencies are removed. It is not my place to comment if this is an appropriate or necessary part of the production process, but what I can say is that this manipulation of sound can completely change the emotional response we will have to the artist.

The way forward

This year I was awarded a grant from The Arts Council England to support the development of my creative practice, with this grant I have been able to research further, study production techniques so that I will be able to translate my Vibrational Medicine Music across many platforms, and in different forms. I will endeavour to educate and promote this form of healing, and learn new ways to guarantee recorded versions contain as many of the frequencies as possible. If the performer / practitioner of Vibrational Medicine in music is in the right relationship with their healing discipline, there is no need to manipulate the sound created. Mainstream music can contain Vibrational medicine if the intention of the music is to heal, and the correct philosophies and practices followed. But, unfortunately there is little focus on this profoundly powerful aspect of music within the popular music industry.

If you would like to know about how music can affect you on a cellular level, and manipulate your physical and mental health please feel free to read my blog ‘Could the way we consume music be affecting our mental and physical health’ In this blog you will find many useful links to scientific research and studies which demonstrate the positive effects Vibrational Medicine has on the human body.
